Apple picking is my favorite fall activity. I grew up apple picking so it’s very special to be able to do it with my family. Fishkill Farms is my favorite orchard near home to go apple picking because it is beautiful and they have organic apples to pick.

One thing I noticed on all the apples this time in the orchard was a white coating on the skin. I’ve seen it before on apples in the orchard and at the store. This is called the “bloom” and is a wax coating made by the apple to help preserve the fruit and reduce evaporation. You can easily rub off the bloom with your fingers to reveal the apple skin.

If you are looking for a fun outdoor activity this fall head outside to do some apple picking and look out for the “bloom” on the apples.
